Taneycomo Lake
Taney County
MO

About Taneycomo~
Taneycomo lake was created in 1913 by the building of Power Site Dam on
the White River for flood control and power supplies to South West Missouri.
Originally Taneycomo Lake was a warm water lake attracting angler's from all
over for the excellent Bass fishing. It basically changed overnight, with the
completion of Table Rock Dam in 1958 upstream. The lake's new source of
water came from 160' below Table Rock Lake's surface basically changing
Taneycomo into a cold flowing water lake overnight. Taneycomo had become the
perfect Trout fishing lake. The average surface temperature below Table Rock
Dam stays around 48 degrees. The lake covers some 2,080 surface
acres, stretching 22 miles from Dam to Dam flowing through the middle of
Branson, Mo to it's end in Forsyth, MO.
Fishing on Taneycomo~
Taneycomo Lake provides for some of the finest trout fishing anywhere in
the world with it's cold water's. The Missouri Department of Conservation
operates Shepherd of the Hills Trout Hatchery located right below Table Rock
Dam, keeping the lake stocked with 750,000 rainbow and brown trout per year,
20,000 being Brown's. A special trophy area exists on the upper end
of Taneycomo below Table Rock Dam three miles downstream to the mouth of Fall
Creek. In this "restricted zone" only artificial lures may be used.
Live bait is strictly prohibited in this area of Taneycomo. Rainbow trout in the
slot limit (12''-20'') must be released unharmed. All brown trout have a 20''
length minimum throughout the lake. Any trophy trout over the 20'' mark should
be released to ensure the survival of our trophy trout fishing. Downstream of
the three mile mark, there is no size limit on rainbows or restrictions of live
bait fishing. A possession limit of 4 rainbow trout may be kept.
Trout Fishing on Lake
Taneycomo~ a quick view
of fishing patterns and techniques we may use.
Trout fishing on Taneycomo Lake can change day to day, hour to hour.
Taneycomo can rapidly change from a lake of standing still water to a fast
moving river. Trout fishing techniques and patterns change accordingly to the
amount of water flow being released at Table Rock Dam, food hatchings, and
recent stocking areas. Fishing in the trophy zone may at times offer you the
chance to catch the big one. Throwing stickbaits
imitating wounded bait or other smaller trout can almost always offer you
that opportunity. Fishing these are always at it's best with the water
moving. 1/16-1/8 ounce in line jigs
are always fun and easy to throw fished swimming or hopped off bottom. Most
typically the jigs work better under early/low light conditions with or without
water movement as well as small spoons and
spinners. Drift fishing is always done with the water moving. It's the
simplest way of fishing out there. Drift fishing is basically slinging a bait
out upstream, holding a rod while the boat movement does all the work as your
bait is drug along bottom. The only work required is setting the hook gently as
a Taneycomo trout takes off with it, and of course fighting him into the boat.
Drift fishing in the trophy zone may be done with an egg
fly/scud combo or other flies. Below the trophy area drifting live bait may
be done with artificial salmon eggs, power
bait or other live bait a trout will snack on. Micro
jigs below a float are often hard to beat at times. Colors of jigs vary with
the water movement. It's always exciting to be watching a float in the water and
suddenly seeing it being pulled under by what could be a trophy Taneycomo trout!
Light line is required for these trout fishing methods. 2 and 4lb line is most
frequently used. Spin cast fishing for trout on Taneycomo is easy and simple for
anyone with any experience level. We can fish out of our fully rigged bass
boats on the lake. Fly fishing below the Dam is another fantastic way to enjoy
the Taneycomo experience. Although I do not offer fly fishing wading
trips, I would be happy to recommend you to a fellow guide with expertise in the
subject.
Taneycomo Lake is the perfect fishing experience for friends, family or corporate gatherings to get out and enjoy a day's guided fishing trip. If you're looking for a fish dinner your catch of legal sized trout will be cleaned and bagged for you at the day's end along with a few favorite ways on cooking them.
